When I neared the end of this novel I started to realize how exuisitely it had been constructed The problem is I read the work in Spanish and Ramirez’ language is too elevated for me to fully grasp as a non native speaker I missed much of the works subtlety and some of its basics and therefore cannot give it a proper review I would only say here that if you’re a student and thinking about reading it in Spanish maybe don’t unless your language is at native level Seeing how it all comes together makes me want to read it again in English so I can enjoy how he weaves the threads into the climax But I don’t see the point since I know now how it ends which will kill its magic This might have been worth five stars I’ll never know

Maybe this reads better in Spanish than English but I didn't really enjoy this book It is a popular book written by a former vice president and is based on Nicaraguan history including events such as Ruben Dario's return to Leon and his death and President Somoza's assassination in 1956 The rest is fiction but it's hard to keep straight if you are in 1906 or 1956 The cast of characters is very long and I had to keep looking at the back of the book to see who was connected with who
